Transboundary Environmental Management

The great lakes, rivers and savannahs of Africa traverse multiple countries, with the Great Rift Valley spanning from Lebanon to Mozambique, emphasising the interconnectedness of Africa’s ecosystems. Whilst individual developments require environmental and social impact assessments to determine their discrete impacts, many environmental challenges require collaborative approaches to achieving successful outcomes – from invasive species management and pollution and run-off to over-fishing.

With new roads, railways and ports improving the interconnectedness of Africa as a continent, addressing the cumulative impacts of new developments is even more critical.

With decades of experience in environmental and social management and impact assessment, Earth Systems is well placed to assist governments and organisations to address transboundary challenges of pollution, invasive species, sustainable resource use and energy and economic development. Earth Systems has significant experience in Water Resource Management, catchment management, Oil and Gas, forestry, biodiversity and invasive species management.

Earth Systems geographic reach across Africa, with offices in Dakar, Senegal and Kigali, Rwanda and extensive language skills including English, French, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, Wolof, Malinke and Pulaar ensure that Earth Systems is capable of working across multiple jurisdictions. Earth Systems is well versed in the relevant policies and regulations surrounding transboundary environmental management, including the EAC Transboundary Ecosystems Management Act of 2010, as well as the Lake Victoria Basin Commission, Nile Equatorial Lakes Subsidiary Action Program and the Commission de l’Ocean Indien.
